How image compression works

Image compression can reduce file sizes for faster website loading and easier sharing. WebP and JPEG are generally suitable for photographs. PNG is useful for images that need lossless encoding or transparency, but it may produce larger files.

The quality slider applies to lossy formats such as JPEG and WebP. PNG encoding does not use the same quality setting. Animated images are processed as a single browser-rendered frame and may lose their animation. Some input formats depend on browser support.
